Established in 2006, this non-profit organization was founded by Kathy Carrol with the aim of providing a sanctuary for stray cats and endangered birds on the island. Lana’i is a relatively small island, spanning 362 km2, with only 3,000 residents and located approximately 14 km away from Maui. The second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago, Lana’i is mostly owned by billionaire Larry Ellison, with the cat rescue area occupying over 12,000 m2 of land only 3 km away from the airport. This tranquil and cozy location offers a peaceful and comfortable setting similar to other areas on the island.
The sanctuary boasts of a well-equipped veterinary hospital on wheels, complete with all the necessary healthcare equipment. To ensure that the cats remain in good health, a doctor and two technicians pay the center a visit twice a month. Moreover, an on-site manager oversees the daily activities at the sanctuary to ensure that the felines receive the utmost care and attention.
Undoubtedly, running and managing such a facility is no walk in the park. However, owing to its strategic location, the center enjoys faster deliveries of supplies. The cats require about 34 kg of food every day, and the center spends around $35,000 annually to have it delivered weekly.
The center receives most of its funding from donors and cat enthusiasts from different parts of the world, with only 5% coming from locals. Many visitors from countries like Japan, Australia, and India come to spend time with the cats and provide food donations. The center has also become a popular tourist destination, attracting almost 10,000 visitors in the past year alone. Beyond providing shelter for stray cats, the center fosters a strong love for felines and even hosted a cat wedding in 2016. They receive around 200 new cats each year, who are given names, photographed, and microchipped. Male cats are neutered, and staff ensure their health before they interact with visitors.
At the center, most cats are given the opportunity to have their basic needs met – food, water, rest. For many, it’s a chance to be part of a loving family, and cat lovers can even choose to adopt one. The center has plans to become a home for up to 1,500 cats, and is currently working on creating a separate space for elderly felines, complete with a more peaceful environment.
