Established in 2006, this non-profit center was founded by Kathy Carrol, a concerned resident of the island. She recognized the need for a safe haven for stray cats and endangered birds on the island of Lana’i, which has a small population of only 3,000 people residing in an area of 362 km2. Located just 14 km from Maui, Lana’i is the second-largest island in Hawaii and is predominantly owned by billionaire Larry Ellison. The cat rescue center spans more than 12,000 m2 of land and is conveniently situated just 3 km away from the airport. As with other areas on the island, this peaceful and idyllic center provides a comfortable environment for its furry residents.
The facility houses a veterinary hospital equipped with top-notch medical equipment, which is mobile and can be transported easily. The cats are visited twice a month by a doctor and two technicians who ensure their health is in check. Moreover, the on-site manager is responsible for the daily monitoring of these feline friends to ensure they receive the best care.
Keeping the center up and running comes at a considerable cost, and it is not an easy task. However, due to the location’s convenience, supplies can be delivered promptly. With the cats consuming a staggering 34 kg of food per day, weekly deliveries are made, which amounts to $35,000 annually.
The center receives the majority of its support from tourists and cat enthusiasts worldwide, with only 5% of donations coming from locals on the island. Visitors from countries like Japan, Australia, and India often bring food and enjoy spending time interacting with the cats. In the past year alone, the center has welcomed almost 10,000 tourists. This place isn’t just for taking care of stray cats either; in 2016, they even organized a cat wedding for people who love felines. Each year, roughly 200 new cats are taken in and given names, chips, and photographs. Male cats are neutered, and staff ensure that all the animals are healthy before allowing them to play with guests.
The center provides a comfortable and safe haven for most cats, with ample provisions for food, water, rest, and space. It’s also a lovely opportunity for them to experience the warmth and care of a large family. Those who have a fondness for cats can select and bring one home as their pet. The center is currently working on a project to offer an exclusive space for elderly cats, which will be more peaceful and secluded. The main goal of Director Vaughn is to relocate all the stray cats into the center from outside.
