After going through an unplanned cesarean delivery, she encountered two cardiac arrests. Nevertheless, she was able to recover with the help of medical professionals who closely monitored her in the ICU. She underwent a blood transfusion and received the necessary care at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Boone Area Humane Society recently shared a post on their Facebook page regarding an older dog that had been through a lot. According to the veterinarians at ISU, this poor dog had given birth to several litters of puppies in the past and had been left behind when her labor became too challenging. It’s heartbreaking to think about what should have been the happiest years of her life being filled with stress and neglect.

The mother dog gave birth to a whopping 21 puppies, but despite the best efforts of veterinarians, it’s with heavy hearts that we share the news that all of them have since passed away. Sadly, due to being underdeveloped and sharing the womb with so many siblings, it was impossible for them to receive the necessary nourishment to survive.

Ruthie, the mama dog, is improving day by day! She’s now able to eat on her own and even go outside. Her friendly and easygoing personality is truly inspiring, and she has been discharged from the hospital to stay with her foster family, where she’ll continue to recover.

The Humane Society is also working hard to bring justice to Ruthie by pursuing legal action against the person who caused her so much pain. Unfortunately, this is proving to be a difficult task due to Iowa’s relatively lax animal protection laws. Nonetheless, they’re determined to see it through and hold the responsible party accountable.
